Martial Arts Today

In the modern world their are a great number of fantastic martial arts to explore and train.  Many have wrongly usurped the name Karate to describe themselves.  In fact Karate schools are very unique and rare.  Students of Karate are equally unique and rare.

Do you know the difference between Karate and other Martial Arts?

Karate refers to martial arts developed in the Ryukyu Islands, what is now known as Okinawa, Japan.  Karate is derived from the indigenous fighting arts of Okinawa, and various influences from China.  Karate can most simply be thought as methods of self defense from Okinawa using open and closed hand strikes, kicks, knee and elbow strikes, joint locks, throws, restraits, and vital point contact.

The Purpose of Karate is summarized beautifully by a simple statement from Kanbun Uechi, the fouder of the particular style of Karate taught at Toma Dojo:

"The purpose of Karate training is to develop stamina, endurance, and patience to calmly accept life's responsibilitis and overcome any difficult situation."

Martial arts that are not Karate:

  • Martial arts developed in Korea (i.e. Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Tang Soo Do, etc.)
  • Judos and Ju-jitsus
  • American martial arts (usually developed from Korean and hybrid influences)
  • and many more.

Refering to these as Karate may reflect a school, instructor, or practice of dubious knowledge, skill, or business ethic.
